What a five-box scale throws away
Everything between the boxes.
On a five-box scale, 61 and 79 are the same answer. On a 0–100 scale they are two different people.
How the answer happened.
Boxes record a click. A puck that slides records the answer and how people arrived at it: where they hovered, whether they changed their mind, how sure the final answer looked.
The honest middle.
Forced steps push people to round themselves off. A continuous scale lets "somewhat" be a real answer.

What is a rating scale in a survey?
A rating scale is the answer format a survey question uses: labeled boxes (Likert), numbers (1 to 10), positions between two opposite words (semantic differential), or a continuous line (visual analog scale). The scale decides how much detail each answer can carry.
What is the difference between a Likert scale and a visual analog scale?
A Likert scale offers a small set of labeled steps, usually five or seven. A visual analog scale is a continuous line between two anchors, so a respondent can answer at any point on it. Likert answers land in buckets; VAS answers land on a 0 to 100 gradient.
Is a 0–100 scale better than a 1 to 5 scale?
It records more. A 0–100 answer can always be grouped into five buckets afterward, but five buckets can never be turned back into the detail they collapsed. If you want simple reporting, you can have both: collect on 0–100, report in buckets.
