Questions people ask

What is this?

A feed of memes and short jokes. You rate each one with the puck, from No to Yes, and most of the next ones are picked from how you rated the last.

How are the picks made?

The first 8 cover eight kinds of humor, one each: wordplay, absurd, dark, everyday, self-deprecating, wholesome, nerdy and sarcasm. After that, picks lean toward the kinds and topics you rate highest and away from anything you mark Off-putting. Memes other people rated well get a small boost.

Is it random?

Partly, on purpose. One meme in every four is picked at random. Comparing how you rate those with the rest is how we check that the picks beat chance. Nothing on screen says which ones they are.

Where do the memes come from?

We write the captions and the text jokes ourselves. The pictures come from museum and archive collections that release images for free reuse, such as The Met, the Library of Congress and NASA. Each one is credited under the meme.

What is the Off-putting chip?

Tap it when a meme bothers you, funny or not. Funny and off-putting are separate judgments, so the chip is logged next to your rating, not instead of it. You'll see less of that kind of meme, and a meme enough people mark is pulled for review.

Do I need an account?

No. Your ratings are tied to this device, with no sign-in. To keep your results, save them from the summary screen.
