Theatre cast pulse

For community theatre directors: how the cast is really doing between the read-through and opening night.

The conviction read: a hedged agree on 'know my lines' two weeks out is the actor still holding the script at the dress rehearsal. It shows up here first, and nobody has to name them.

Questions about this template

When should the cast get it?

Partway between the read-through and tech week, with time left to change the rehearsal schedule. Sending it again a couple of weeks before opening shows whether lines and scene work have caught up.

What if 'I understand what the director wants from my scenes.' lands low?

Often your notes are not landing. Try giving them in a different form, such as a short talk per scene or written notes. A hedged answer here often comes from actors who won't ask for clarity in front of the company.
